Diabetes Mellitus
Numbers
say that diabetes mellitus, hypertension and tobacco abuse
are the three most regular causes of ED in men over 50 years
old. Approximately 60% of men suffering from diabetes report
to have erectile dysfunction within 10 years of diagnosis.
In other words, impotence is not a surprise for persons
with diabetes, but rather a process developing in time.
Diabetes
and vascular diseases are often met together and have similar
forms of manifestation: the premature and severe hardening
of the arteries. Diabetes mellitus becomes even more serious
when associated with high levels of blood glucose, obesity
or smoking, causing thus not only arteriosclerosis but also
myopathy- a muscle disease, all that leading to man's inability
of getting and keeping an erection 10 to 15 years earlier
than normal time.
Also common in men with diabetes is the peripheral neuropathy
which involves damages of the nerves controlling erections.
