PDE5 Inhibitors are the most approached method of treating erectile dysfunction. Specialists observed the erectile process developed naturally and concluded that as a reaction to sexual arousal penis tissue secrets a substance named cyclic Guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) that determines the duration and rigidity of the erection. In other words the more cGMP secreted, the firmer and longer the erection.
Knowing that cGMP is the key of the erectile dysfunction specialists began to develop a method inhibiting the degradation of cGMP. This is how Levitra (as well as Viagra and Cialis) appeared as treatment of ED.
Levitra is called a PDE5 Inhibitor because it blocks the enzyme phosphodiesterase-5, which neutralizes cGMP.

However, PDE5 Inhibitors such as Levitra work only on men sexually stimulated, when there is cGMP to preserve, and don't create erections spontaneously. Levitra increases blood flow to the penis and thus helps men achieve and maintain an erection.
The drug is taken orally and lasts in the body for up to 6 hours. In order to be effective, the drug should be swallowed 1 hour prior to sexual activity. Vardenafil can only be used by a doctor's prescription.
